Have one-on-one conversations about which of our values contribute to sexual violence and which values prevent it.
We can talk about:

Healthy relationships and sexuality with our youth, and have these conversations early on and often;

Why phrases like "boys will be boys" and "you throw like a girl" are harmful;

The impact of violence shown on television and video games with kids; and
-
How gender-based violence affects our community.
We are inundated with violence in the media, and many of us do not take the time to critically examine how it impacts our lives. Take the time to teach your child to think critically about how his/her violent video games reinforce gender inequality and normalize violence. Talk to your child about how their television shows and video games may be impacting his/her own mind and behaviors.
